New London, CT - Neil E. Humphreville, 87, of 26 Hillside Road, New London, husband of Joan (Powers) Humphreville, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at home. Mr. Humphreville was born in Westfield, Mass., on Sept. 6, 1921, the son of Enid Perkins and Howard Humphreville. A graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, he received his master's degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business in 1943. During World War II, he served in the Army in France and later worked at the Pentagon in the Office of the Chief of Staff as an aide to General Dwight D. Eisenhower. He joined Robertson Paper Box in Montville as a sales trainee in 1946, was elected vice president of marketing in 1966, and was later made vice chairman of the Robertson Group. He was a national director of the Paperboard Packaging Council and, for the last 20 years, served on the board of F. M. Howell & Company in Elmira, N.Y. Mr. Humphreville was presiding officer of Pequot Chapel, a vestryman at St. James' Episcopal Church, a corporator of Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, a trustee of the New England Savings Bank, a director of the Pequot Point Beach Company, and president of the Thames Club. He was also a member of the Harvard Club of Southern Connecticut, the Harvard Club of New York City, and the Ariston Club in New London. Class secretary at Harvard Business School for over 60 years, he was chairman of two of their reunions. He served on the boards of Pine Point School in Stonington and the Madeira School in McLean,Va. He was an avid tennis player and a long-time member of the New Haven Lawn Club. He is survived by his wife Joan (Powers) of 64 years and by his children and their spouses, John E. and Susan M. Humphreville of Los Angeles, Calif., Richard L. Humphreville of New London, Joan H. and John H. Fitzgibbon of Savannah, Ga., Edward T. Humphreville and Constance R. Hornig of Los Angeles, Ellen H. and James C. McGuire of New London, and Robert A. Humphreville of Cambridge, Mass. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren.
